COMMON RELATIONSHIP ISSUES

In this section, you’ll find explanations of various relationship conflicts, along with a brief guide to help you identify what’s going on. Often, we know something isn’t right, but we’re not sure what’s causing it. Don’t hesitate to seek advice.

WE'RE THINKING ABOUT SPLITTING UP, GETTING A DIVORCE, BREAKING UP…

If you find yourselves at this painful juncture, the best course of action is to seek professional help to guide you through the process. Strategies for managing your emotions during this time are essential; they help us cope better amid all the turmoil. Many couples break up without having identified the problem, or without realizing they had the chance to rebuild their relationship using various techniques and tools. So, if you’re at this point but haven’t made a final decision yet, don’t hesitate to reach out to me.

If you’ve decided to move forward, having a coach there to support you during the breakup will help ensure that the process proceeds with as much emotional stability and respect as possible, so that the atmosphere, the entire process, and the aftermath are much less stressful and painful for you—and for your children, if you have any.

AN AFFAIR

This may be one of the main reasons couples seek professional help. The contrast between feeling fine and then having something like this blow up usually causes a strong sense of not knowing what to do, of broken trust, of disappointment… Most often, people need help recovering from infidelity in the relationship, to regain trust and peace of mind in a romantic relationship, whether with the same partner or a new one in the future. It’s also possible that if you’ve been unfaithful, you feel incredibly guilty and have gotten stuck in a cycle you don’t know how to break out of. We tend to think that only the person who was cheated on goes through a rough time, when in reality both partners can adopt unhealthy roles stemming from uncontrolled feelings of mistrust or guilt. The truth is that rebuilding a relationship after infidelity can take time, but with commitment from both partners, it is simple and entirely possible.

I FEEL LIKE I DON'T LOVE YOU ENOUGH

Just because you feel that sense of dissatisfaction doesn't always mean that the relationship isn't working out, that the love between you is lacking, or that you're not meant to be together.

When something in a romantic relationship has caused strain or deterioration, we tend to think that what happened is because our love isn't strong enough, or because we don't love each other as much as we thought we did.

It’s possible that what’s going wrong in your relationship is actually something inherent to the relationship itself (a lack of communication, one of you feeling jealous, a past infidelity…), or simply that something in your routine is causing you discomfort that’s affecting the relationship.

IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO TALK TO MY PARTNER

If you can’t sit down and have deep or meaningful conversations with your partner because they get upset or angry too easily, emotional intimacy is impossible. For a relationship to be stable, healthy, and long-lasting, you need to work on building good communication based on assertiveness, honesty, and a mutual commitment to improving together.

WE HAD CHILDREN AND EVERYTHING CHANGED

Having children can be a deeply rewarding experience for a couple, but it also brings unexpected challenges that can strain the relationship. The arrival of a child transforms daily life: responsibilities seem endless, personal time is drastically reduced, and the couple barely finds moments to connect alone. This can lead to feelings of exhaustion and burnout.

They don’t see each other much, and when they do, it’s usually to argue. On top of that, there’s the complexity of parenting. Temper tantrums, differences in parenting styles, and the difficulty of working as a team can turn what should be a strengthened bond into a source of frustration. When attempts at collaboration fail, it’s easy for one or both partners to perceive the other as an obstacle or just another item in the heavy backpack of mental load.

If you feel that your relationship has become strained or distant since having children, Laura—a coach specializing in healthy relationships and couples therapy can help you reconnect and strengthen your bond as a couple.

MY PARTNER DOESN'T UNDERSTAND ME; WHEN WE ARGUE, IT SEEMS LIKE ONLY WHAT HE/SHE FEELS MATTERS.

In a romantic relationship, valuing your partner’s experiences and emotions is essential for avoiding conflict and strengthening your bond. When we assume that our perspective is the only truth, we fall into the trap of ego bias, which hinders communication and empathy.

Active listening is an essential tool for couples who want to improve their relationship. It involves truly listening, validating each other’s emotions, and acknowledging that both perspectives are important. This practice not only improves communication but also fosters mutual respect, helping to build a strong, healthy relationship and creating a safe space where both partners feel cared for, heard, and understood.

If you feel like communication in your relationship has hit a rut, booking an appointment here so we can talk about the challenges you face when communicating may help you develop these skills and strengthen your bond as a couple.

I'M SO JEALOUS/MY PARTNER IS TOO JEALOUS

Jealousy is a normal part of a romantic relationship; it stems from a mechanism designed to keep the couple together, acting as an alarm when we feel the other person is drifting away or might form a bond with someone else. If it’s healthy—if we know how to manage it and not blow it out of proportion—there’s no problem. When jealousy controls us, prevents us from thinking clearly, and causes anxiety, it becomes pathological jealousy—and that is when the intervention of a coach is absolutely essential. Many people who feel jealous perceive it as “acts of love” or proof of how deeply they love each other, when in reality it is a problem that needs to be resolved. If you feel that your partner isn’t at peace because of jealousy, or if you’re experiencing it yourself, write to me. It is possible to live in peace, and I can teach you how.

HAS IT FADED? I WANT TO FEEL THAT EXCITEMENT FROM THE FIRST FEW MONTHS

First, it’s important to understand that falling in love is a phase in which everything seems idyllic and is characterized by an almost magical intensity, but it lasts about a year. After that comes the stage of stable love, which is much less intense: the the spark is less intense, everything is calmer, and routine begins to set in. It’s possible that this stability—in contrast to the intensity of the previous months—will make you feel like nothing is the same anymore. However, this is completely normal, and even if there is uncertainty, that discomfort is only temporary.

If you’re having trouble adjusting to this sense of calm in this new phase of your life, or if you think the problem lies elsewhere—such as a possible loss of attraction, a lack of intimacy, communication issues, or any other factor—please don’t hesitate to reach out to me.

WE'RE GOING TO BE PARENTS / GETTING READY FOR THE BABY'S ARRIVAL

The arrival of a baby is one of the most significant and life-changing moments in a person’s life. However, it can also lead to feelings of insecurity, stress, and a sense of not knowing where to start. That’s why talking to a professional before and during this process can make a huge difference. Guidance and support on topics such as establishing routines, dividing roles, reaching agreements as a couple, and providing emotional care for the family unit are essential for navigating this stage harmoniously and enjoying parenthood in a way that doesn’t leave behind who we are.

Many first-time parents experience conflicts or strain because they haven’t discussed expectations, boundaries, or ways to care for the baby and themselves. Preparing in advance, with my help as a Specialized Couples Coach, helps prevent misunderstandings and strengthen your bond—both as a couple and with your future child. If you’re expecting a baby or planning to, now is the perfect time to learn communication skills, emotional management, and how to balance your roles as a couple and as parents (or as a single parent).

If you feel like you’re struggling to reach agreements, get organized, or find time to take care of yourselves as well, please reach out to me. Parenting can be a joyful experience filled with peace of mind, mutual understanding, and love, and I can help you make that happen.

issues related to parenthood

ROUTINE HAS RUINED THE RELATIONSHIP

Stress, responsibilities, work, not enough free time… All of these factors can make our relationship feel monotonous, to the point where we end up hating it—even when our partner just breathes a little louder than usual.

Try doing new activities or things you both enjoy together, and do them spontaneously—by making small changes to your usual routine. Also, make sure to carve out some time for yourselves and set aside certain moments of the day just for the two of you to make the most of your time together. You don’t need a lot of money to be super creative in your life; a night with relaxing music and gentle massages, or a couple of sandwiches eaten while lounging in the countryside, can be great ways to give your relationship a fantastic boost.

Sex is also often a source of frustration if it becomes boring due to routine. If you can’t seem to get your spark back, it might be a sign of a deeper issue. Whether that’s the case or you’re just not sure how to approach this topic, don’t hesitate to seek advice.

DISTRUST

Nothing makes you feel more at ease than knowing you can trust your partner when it comes to fidelity, respect, and assertiveness… You know that person could hurt you, but they won’t. That’s why a relationship in which one or both partners feel distrust eventually breaks down, because trust is linked to intimacy, to a sense of connection… to the feeling of being a team. And if you can’t see your partner as a loyal companion with whom you can work side by side in your shared life, with whom you can form a team, then you need to address that problem as soon as possible.

At other times, you may feel that it is your partner who doesn’t trust you, and that the bond between you is breaking down just the same. In any case, it is possible to resolve these conflicts with time and the right tools, with the help of a qualified professional who specializes in this type of conflict.

I OFTEN FEEL LIKE MY PARTNER IS JUST ANOTHER CHILD—OR MY MOM OR DAD—CONSTANTLY CORRECTING ME ALL DAY LONG

Sometimes, one partner takes on the role of “caregiver” or
“corrector,” while the other is treated as if they need
constant supervision or guidance. This can create a cycle of infantilization,
where the balance between equals is lost and the relationship
suffers.

These dynamics usually stem from good intentions: looking out for others or correcting what is perceived as a mistake. However, they can undermine a partner’s abilities, create resentment, and weaken the emotional connection.

Breaking this cycle requires recognizing these nuances in our dynamics where, rather than viewing the other person as a parent or a rebellious teenager, we must acknowledge
them as an autonomous adult. This allows us to foster communication and establish clear boundaries between the two adults, as well as define their roles and contributions to the relationship. Remembering that both partners are a team can restore mutual respect and strengthen the relationship.
